I recently met with an international telephone company who is using an open source monitoring tool called Nagios to keep tabs on their international VoIP network. Having reviewed several small network monitoring options, including Servers Alive and Jumpnode's Pulse product, I decided to dive into Nagios to see how feasible it is to deploy this full featured network monitoring tool for the small network environment.

Eyes on Your Network - Nagios on BSD
I have long wanted a Nagios installation to monitor our network happenings and keep me apprised of quirks and outages. I have used a smattering of utilities here and there, but most required that you sit right in front of them 24/7 and had limited configuration options. Nagios is the pocket battleship of monitoring applications and, of course, it doesn’t cost a penny.

chkrootkit on FreeBSD with Nagios integration
The goal of this HOWTO is to show how to get chkrookit installed and then monitored from Nagios/nrpe. I admittedly am not a Bash guru, but the below script works for me.
