Broadcom 43xx wireless on FreeBSD 7

FreeBSD is one of the most awesome UNIX-like operating systems available. It even works on laptops, just not very well on mine. I own an Acer Extensa 5220, a major el-cheapo piece of kit containing a Broadcom 4311 wireless LAN card. These same cards are known to appear in Dell laptops as 1390 cards. Finally, after a week of fiddling, I got this card to work natively on FreeBSD 7.

WPA/WPA2 Support in OpenBSD

Damien Bergamini (damien@) just committed WPA-support for OpenBSD. In the commit message, Damien states that "bwi(4), malo(4), ral(4), iwn(4), wpi(4), ural(4), rum(4), upgt(4), and zyd(4) should work." And, Damien says "support for more chipsets should arrive soon."

Using a Bluetooth phone with Linux

My old mobile phone, which was held together with duct tape for the last few months of its sad existence, has finally been replaced with something more modern. I wanted to pick up a programmable, Linux-based phone like the RAZR2V8 or the FIC Neo1973, but I'm unfortunately a Verizon customer, which means that my options are currently very, very limited—at least until Verizon follows through with its open network plans. I ended up grabbing a vx8550, which is Verizon's rebranded (and, of course, crippled) LG Chocolate. This is the first phone I have ever owned that actually has Bluetooth support, so I spent some time yesterday learning how to use Bluetooth on Linux. This is a short overview of what I discovered.

Two tools for enabling wireless cards

No other hardware nowadays supports GNU/Linux as weakly as wireless network adapters. Between the constant release of new models and major vendors who are uninterested in supporting the operating system, free drivers for wireless cards are next to impossible to reverse engineer. Nor can you find many retailers willing to customize laptops as readily as they do workstations. In this situation, ndiswrapper and the Broadcom firmware cutter provide a functional, if not always satisfactory, solution.

Webmail accounts hacked via WLAN

It has been recognised for some time now that it is a bad idea to check your emails through an unencrypted WLAN hotspot. If the information is unencrypted, an attacker can, for example, hijack the log-in information for webmail or POP3 accounts. However, this can be accomplished with even less effort, as demonstrated by Robert Graham of Errata Security at the Black Hat Conference. In order to hijack a Gmail account, for example, an attacker can simply read the connected victim’s cookies and use this information for logging in later. It is thus no longer necessary to find out the login name and password.

Managing wireless connections seamlessly with wicd

The nature of my work forces me to be something of a digital nomad -- my notebook computer and a wireless connection are essential parts of my working day. I've been known to move between several wireless access points in one day. While I've had never had any problems with the wireless cards in my Linux-powered notebooks, most of the wireless connection tools I've used have fallen a bit flat. One of the few wireless connection managers that I've actually found useful is wicd -- the Wireless Interface Connection Daemon, pronounced "wicked." It's a lot like the Windows wireless network connection tool in both appearance and ease of use.

New kernel brings better wireless support

In Linus Torvalds' words, "Not a whole lot of changes since -rc7," but the more significant upgrades in kernel release 2.6.22, announced over the weekend, include a new wireless stack, a new FireWire stack, and a new SLAB allocator for more efficient memory management.

"For too many years, Linux wireless support has worked, but not very well," according to the folks at Linux Kernel Newbies. "2.6.22 has a completely new, better wireless stack included."
