MySQL 6 will be fully open source
MySQL AB, property of Sun Microsystems, reversed its decision about releasing advanced MySQL 6 features under a closed source license. Last month it was announced that the upcoming version of the widely used database server would not contain certain closed source encryption and compression backup extensions. Reportedly, those would be included only in a paid enterprise version. Now, according to a blog post at mysql.com, the decision has been reversed and MySQL will remain fully open source.

Summer Programming Opportunities for Students (Summer of Code)
The FreeBSD Project is happy to again participate in Google's Summer of Code program. This program provides $4500 in funding to allow students to spend the summer writing open source software. If you or someone you know would be interested in this program, please visit our website at :
http://www.freebsd.org/projects/summerofcode.html
There you will find a large list of interesting projects in diverse areas of modern Unix operating system development. Some example tasks involve writing kernel/networking regression test suites, working on peripheral device driver infrastructure, improving multibyte character support, improving the IPv6 support in userland utilities, and much more.

Intel launches open-source project
Intel launched its first official open-source software project today, a tool that makes it much easier to program multi-core chips working together.
"We did it because our customers said, `If it's going to be a standard, it needs to be everywhere and it needs to be forever,"' said James Reinders, chief evangelist for Intel's software development products, at the O'Reily Open Source Convention in Portland, Ore.
